When working at a Managed service provider, one problem that comes up quite a bit is data storage. While there are a variety of different types of requests I get regarding this, one of the most common request would have to be accessibility. People often ask for the ability to access office files on their laptops at home, perhaps across different devices. In some cases, it is necessary to share specific files with people outside of their organization.

Cloud storage services are becoming more affordable and accessible as time goes on. Chances are your probably familiar with, or at least heard or used one of these services already. For those of you who aren’t, I’d like to give an overview of some of the benefits and features of of these services.

Almost all the Cloud solutions out there today support features like offline sync; this saves all, or a selection of files you define offline for access when your away from the internet. Any changes you make will save back to the cloud whenever you come back online. Make sure you have the space to store these before you go downloading everything you have, though.

Microsoft focuses quite a bit on their collaboration features, allowing multiple users to edit a single document at the same time when using the web-browser based versions of office. These can be accessed by logging into office.com with your Microsoft account. As a side note, you may also notice that Microsoft provides a healthy amount of cloud storage with most Office 365 licenses. For example, Office 365 Business includes a full Terabyte worth of storage (about 1000GB).

While most certainly NOT a replacement for a proper backup, these solutions can also provide emergency access to your important documents. If you can’t access or use your computer for whatever reason, as long you stored your documents on the cloud, you’ll still be able to access them while you’re on the internet.

New features and services for cloud storage are added all the time across a variety of vendors. With all the options available, there is bound to be a solution that fits just about everyone’s storage needs.
