Ransomware is costing local businesses thousands of dollars from locked up operating systems to encrypted files, and it is definitely something you want to avoid. So, what exactly is ransomware? Ransomware is essentially like being held digitally hostage with the demand of ransom for release. It could be a file or your whole computer, and it could cost you a pretty penny to get it back. Don’t worry though, there are a few ways to monitor whether you could be in danger of falling victim:

Is your software out of date? It’s time for an update, if so! Out-of-date software could be putting you at risk with a lack of protection. Do you back up your info? Backing up your information to a cloud (preferable) or to an external hard drive could mean the difference between thousands of dollars out of pocket and having the upper hand. Is your operating system no longer patched? Effective patch management could mean the difference between safety and vulnerability to malicious users. Patching means there are no holes to worm through!
